| IDPAIDPA is a shooting sport which simulates real life self defense scenarios. It is great fun for new and average shooters while remaining challenging and rewarding for experienced shooters as well. Participating in IDPA events can be done with minimal cost to the shooter. It's not about having a “top of the line” heavily modified gun. It's about using standard everyday handguns. Basically it tests the skills of the shooter, not the equipment.
Equipment: A pistol or revolver in 9mm/.38 cal. or higher is required. A holster which covers the trigger of the handgun is required. Three magazines are required for pistols. Three speed loaders are required for revolvers. Magazine or speed loader carriers are required. Hearing and eye protection are also required. You will also need approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
Scoring: Scoring is done with a time and points system. Certain areas of the target add time onto your shooting time. There are also time penalties for shooting a “non threat” target, failure to neutralize, & procedural errors. Your final time after penalty times are added is your score.
Safety: Safety is always the top priority during IDPA shooting events. Always follow the basic safety rules. Treat every firearm as though it were loaded. Never point a gun at anything that you do not wish to destroy. Keep your finger off of the trigger until your sights are on target and your ready to shoot. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Beyond these safety rules IDPA has it's own set of rules that need to be followed. All guns are to be unloaded unless you are the one on the firing line. The only place that you may handle your gun is either in the designated safe area(no ammo allowed) or the firing line. While moving between firing positions you need to make sure that your finger is off the trigger. Also always be aware of the direction your muzzle is pointed(always down range).
Course of fire: A course of fire is the scenario in which the shooter engages targets. A course of fire may be simple or complex. It will usually contain multiple threat targets with one or more non threat targets. There may be walls, barrels, vehicles, or other props. The shooter may be forced to shoot from multiple positions or even while on the move. The shooter is to utilize cover at all times when engaging targets or reloading.
Dates & Times: June 9th, June 23rd, July 7th, July 21st, August 4th, and August 18th. We will start shooting around 6:00 PM.
All you have to do is come out to the club on shoot nights and have fun. Help setting up and taking down is appreciated.
Cost: $5.00 per night. Money from the IDPA shoots will go towards targets, supplies, & equipment.
Memberships: All shooters must be members of the Fairmont Trap Club. The rifle/pistol range and trap shooting will be closed during these events. Club memberships can be obtained at Olson Locker in Fairmont.
